McClatchy Will Not Implement Pay Walls, Happy With Google Links 09 February 2010 at 6:33 pm by admin

The strategy led by News Corp. to remove free news content from the web is now under threat with news that one of the United States’ largest newspaper groups will be keeping their links in Google, and their content free. McClathchy CEO Gary Pruitt said in a speech Tuesday that McClathchy is “very comfortable with free content supported by advertising,” and that “We don’t view [the free model] as fatally flawed.” Pruitt also discussed their relationship with Google, Yahoo and others, saying that strategic arrangements with Yahoo and Google drive 20% of traffic to the company.

+ Aus Media Gets Encyclopedia Dramatica Story Wrong, Only Some Search Links Removed By admin 14 January 2010 at 8:08 pm and have No Comments

The Australian media (via an AAP story) is reporting today that Google Australia has agreed to “take down a racist site” ( Fairfax ) or block “links to Encyclopedia Dramatica Aborigine page” (News Ltd). The report details a complaint from an Aboriginal man Steve Hodder-Watt who typed “Aboriginal and Encyclopedia” into Google and found Encyclopedia Dramatica on the list. Hodder-Watt lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission in an attempt to have the links removed from Google, stating that the page on Aboriginal people in Encyclopedia Dramatica is “one of the most offensive sorts of racial vilification you could possibly find.” The report claims that (and it’s the same copy on both News and Fairfax) “Google has agreed to take down links to a website that promotes racist views of indigenous Australians.” “Google acknowledged its legal responsibility to remove links from their search engine to the offensive site” and quotes Hodder-Watt’s lawyer saying that “Lo and behold they [Google] agreed last night to take down the sites.” We contacted Google Australia today to confirm the story, and received this statement confirming only part of the news: We respond to complaints and review them by reference to local law.

+ Why Is Piracy Being Forgotten In The Hulu Is Bad For TV Debate? By admin 07 December 2009 at 7:02 pm and have No Comments

Online TV streaming site Hulu has been a success since launching in March 2008, be it one by numbers as it has attracted more and more viewers. That it might not be covering costs yet is a given, but if you believe the rhetoric coming from various corners of the media world, Hulu is also bad for television. + 2010 could be the biggest disaster in the making for consumers and media By admin 01 December 2009 at 12:07 am and have No Comments

The time frame of this could shift to 2011 depending on how long it takes for all the details to be worked out but be assured that when the Comcast purchase of NBC goes ahead the consumer is is going to get the short end of the stick – a very short stick. Now to be honest when I first heard of the plan for Comcast to buy NBC my initial reaction was that it was an exceedingly stupid idea but that was pretty well the end of it. Then I was reading a post by Chez at Dues Ex Malcontent that pointed to a post by Josh Silvers at Huffington Post that took a look at this pending deal and didn’t like what he saw.

+ AOL’s Latest Brainwave: Lets Copy Demand Media By admin 30 November 2009 at 7:42 pm and have No Comments

AOL has announced that its new strategy is to copy Demand Media through automated topic creation and mass outsourcing of writing to freelancers. According to a report that first appeared in the Wall Street Journal , “AOL is putting the finishing touches on a high-tech system for mass-producing news articles, entertainment and other online content.” The new system will identify topics people are searching for, them pump out content to match that via a new AOL outsourcing site called Seed.com. What isn’t clear from the report is how this strategy will affect blogs within the AOL network; CEO Tim Armstrong is talking about revolutionizing content delivery and as one site put it, “largely replacing his editorial staff with robots.” Most of those editorial staff members work across AOL content sites, the core of which use to be the Weblogs Inc network
